I remember few years ago, I gifted a leather jacket to my bro but now when I see him wearing the jacket, I really find the jacket is as new as it was few years back when I bought it. Amazing! Recently, when I asked him how he managed to keep the ‘polished appearance’ of the jacket, he smiled. I kept on bugging him to disclose me the secret and after few forced bug ups, he finally unfolded the secret, which I am going to disclose now.

Everyone, more or less, own leather items made of leather like shoes, jackets, seats of your motorbike, seats of your car or maybe a small piece of leather accessory. Providing a good clean polished and supple look to the leather items is our job because we own it and we need to care for our own possession. Keeping your leather items clean is a few minute job which is aren’t expensive as well. So cleaning and conditioning your leather items is necessary as this will preserve the look, feel, and quality of the leather for a longer period of time. Here are some ideas and ways on how to Use Leather Conditioners.

1. Create Leather Conditioners - You can create leather conditioners on your own. Add two parts virgin olive oil with one part vinegar. Or if you do not want to use virgin olive oil you can substitute linseed oil. Mix this in a lidded jar by adding the ingredients, closing the jar with the lid and shaking the jar vigorously. Apply this solution to your leather items with a clean cloth and let it set entire night, and then rub your leather with a clean cloth.

2. Use Branded Leather Conditioners - It is always safe to get an advice on cleaning of leather items from the branded company you buy. Buy ‘special oils’ that are non-toxic, non-reactive, odorless, and non-inflammable Leather Conditioners. These ‘special oils’ are used during commercial tanning of raw leather to give a soft sensation to the animal hides. I personally use Lexol Brand for cleaning my leather items because its chemical formula absorbs and penetrates into leather well and provides desired softness, flexibility and strength to the leather.

Don’t forget to CLEAN leather before you condition it.

1. For High Quality Leather - Remove the dirt with a moist cotton cloth and then condition it.
2. For Medium Quality Leather – Remove the dirt with saddle soap and water and then condition it.
3. Low Quality Leather (Split leather mostly) – Remove the Dirt with a dry cotton cloth and then condition it.
